The UN Climate Change Conference COP 27, hosted by Egypt, marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Egypt's COP27 presidency vision is to move from negotiations and planning to implementation. The main aim of COP27 is to harmonise global efforts and turn pledges and commitments into real actions on the ground to mitigate climate change and secure a sustainable future for all.
COP27 will bring parties together to accelerate action towards achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Convention on Climate Change. This year should see the implementation of the Glasgow pact to create a work programme to deliver on ambitions for mitigation, and a global agenda to place adaptation at the forefront of action.
CO2GeoNet is playing it’s role as a UNFCCC-accredited Research and Independent Non-governmental Organisation by communicating on the vital role that CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) and CO2 Capture and Utilization (CCU) have to play in meeting the Paris Agreement targets.
CO2GeoNet will participate in the Negotiation Zone with two side events and an exhibit: explore this dedicated website to find out more.
CO2GeoNet is a pan-European scientific Association, legally registered in France, which joins together 27 partners from 21 European countries, ranging from national geological surveys, through to research institutes and universities, all with a high international profile and critical mass in CO2 geological storage research.
CO2GeoNet is acknowledged as the European scientific authority dealing with all aspects of geological storage of CO2. Through activities in collaborative research, information and communication, training and scientific advice, CO2GeoNet is engaged in enabling the safe and efficient deployment of CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) technology in order to mitigate climate change and ocean acidification.
CO2GeoNet is contributing, in collaboration with other international organisations, to side-events and a booth at COP27.
Our role in COP27 is to provide clear and impartial scientific information on geological storage of CO2, and to engage in discussions with negotiators and civil society.
Our aim is to communicate the vital role for CCS in reducing CO2 emissions and its role in completing the climate change mitigation portfolio. CCS is an effective and ready-to-deploy technology.

Theme:
CO2 removal and geological storage are a key part of achieving net zero/negative targets and critical to manage overshoot. While scaling CDR brings challenges & opportunities for sustainable growth, developing countries could offer efficient large-scale deployment, driving growth & job creation.

Speakers:
Keynotes and panel discussion with representatives from African Youth, Government of Senegal, Climate Action Platform–Africa, UN-ECLAC, UN-ESCAP, geological storage expert.
Theme:
There is a growing interest from Mediterranean countries that is bringing CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) onto national agendas to help meet climate targets. New initiatives are developing, adapted to the geology, transport systems and CO2 producers in this region. The CO2 storage potential of the Mediterranean region (both offshore and onshore) and the possibility to activate cross border collaboration amongst the more industrialised countries of southern Europe support this growing momentum.
